Two Kinds of Empty Water
A chart shows blank water where nobody has sounded and blank water where soundings found nothing in the way. They look identical and mean opposite things. Confusing the two is the most common reasoning error in this entire category — and it runs in both directions.
The useful question is never only what was found, but whether anyone looked and how hard. These three keep that in front of us.
Where a compound has not been properly tested, we write that it has not been tested. Where it has been tested adequately and did not work, we write that. These are not two strengths of the same statement, and a page that leaves you unable to tell which one applies has told you almost nothing.
Knowing the difference makes you a better reader of claims. It says nothing about which of them apply to you, and an open question in the literature is not an invitation to experiment on yourself. What belongs in your regimen is settled with a physician or pharmacist.
Overstating what is known sells product. Overstating what has been ruled out sells certainty, and it is just as inaccurate. We are not here to debunk any more than to promote — only to say which of the two blanks we are looking at. We sell no supplement, hold no affiliate arrangement, and publish no testimonials.
An open question is not a green light. Reading that something has not been properly tested is a reason for caution, not a reason to try it and find out — untested also means unknown risks, and this distinction is often used to sell exactly the things it should make you slower about. Equally, it is no basis for setting aside advice a clinician has given you personally, which rests on things about you that no study population contains.
Health Notice: This site carries general educational reading and nothing else. It makes no diagnosis, issues no prescription, and does none of what an examination by a qualified physician does. No supplement stands in for a reasonable diet or for clinical care. Talk to your doctor before you begin, stop, or adjust anything you take, and treat that as mandatory rather than advisable if you are on prescription medication or living with an existing condition.

If we have called something untested when a trial exists, or called it disproven when the evidence only runs thin, send the citation. Both errors get corrected in public.
